Problem Statement

The 2020 Black infant mortality rates more than doubled compared to their White counterparts. Additionally, within the top five leading causes of infant death, you continue to find racial disparities where Black and Brown babies are affected at much higher rates.

At I Know Newborns We Believe

By educating more Black and Brown parents about how to care and advocate for their newborns, then I will play a role in lowering the rates of preventable infant deaths. Institutional racism within our healthcare system has plagued Black and Brown communities and I am ready to join the efforts in combating this through this business.

Parents Also Ask

As a NICU nurse dedicated to newborn care, breastfeeding is certainly a personal decision. While it’s true that “breast is best” due to its numerous benefits, breastfeeding or pumping may not be feasible for everyone. It’s important to remember that “fed is best,” whether it’s through breastfeeding or bottle feeding. I encourage you to discuss your options with your pediatrician and/or lactation consultant to make an informed decision that suits your baby’s needs and your lifestyle. Check out my “Resources” page for breastfeeding support and this amazon list for recommended feeding supplies!

If you’re expecting a baby who may need NICU care, it’s essential to be informed and prepared. The NICU is a specialized unit that provides critical care for newborns with health challenges. You can prepare by:

  • Educating yourself about common NICU procedures and equipment.
    • Check out IKN’s NICU Parent Glossary Ebook
  • Discussing your concerns and questions with your healthcare provider.
    • Check out IKN’s NICU Parent Advocacy Script Ebook
  • Packing a hospital bag with essentials for both you and your baby.
    • Check out IKN’s FREE Hospital Bag Checklist Ebook and Amazon list
  • Identifying a support network to lean on during this time.
    • Our “Resources” page has many NICU support resources for you to explore
  • Trusting the expertise of the NICU healthcare team, who will guide you through the process with compassion and care.

Deciding when to call the pediatrician for your baby can vary depending on the situation. As a general guideline, contact your pediatrician if your baby experiences:

  • A fever (rectal temperature of 100.4°F or higher) in the first three months.
  • Difficulty breathing or bluish skin.
  • Signs of dehydration (e.g., reduced wet diapers, dry mouth).
  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Unusual lethargy or difficulty waking your baby.

Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and reach out to your
pediatrician if you have any concerns about your baby’s health. Trust your gut and
parental instincts. You know your baby the best!

Car seat safety is paramount for your baby’s protection during travel. For information on car seat safety, we recommend referring to reputable sources like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)Safe Kids Worldwide, or the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). These organizations provide comprehensive guidelines on choosing the right car seat for your child’s age, weight, and height.

The “best” car seat will depend on your baby’s individual needs and your vehicle’s specifications. Look for seats that meet safety standards, offer proper fit and installation, and are easy to use. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and register your car seat for important safety updates. If you need additional guidance, don’t hesitate to consult with a certified car seat technician.
